I try to push myself to build that, because I'm in love with poetry and it feeds me. Even remembering open mic nights in high school and going to different places as I grew up, it was always a sense of community. I think that's what I started learning early on in poetry, since it's such a small group. What is the most rewarding part of teaching and guest-reading? It reminded me of my mom teaching me to whistle, and I thought I could use that symbol on the page and try to see if people would mouth it. When I was researching the history of the asterisk, I really gravitated towards that because it reminded me of the sun. How can I do this in a poetic sense?įor example, in “Amá Teaches Me How to Whistle,” I was thinking, “How can a poet mimic the physicality of sound on the page?” There was once a class I was taking, and they would ask if there was a certain symbol that we could try to mouth that does not sound like “i” or “e,” like an exclamation mark. It gives me another lens to figure out what I want to do visually. What I usually do is create collage pieces using nature and documentation from my grandparents-and from myself-to elicit naturalization, what does naturalization mean? Questioning whose authority is given to naturalization, especially as indigenous folks from Mexico. Over the years I’ve dabbled in photography, collage and other mediums that I connect to, but mostly it's just for myself. What place does visual art hold in your creative practice? There are over 500 anti-trans bills that are trying to be passed in the United States, and I started thinking about what type of poetic form I would like to use to erase the hate that's in there and bring out the love and life that we as trans folks have. That teenage fire that was just sick of this system. There's a sense of fire that never went out of me from when I was younger. The more I started getting into it, the more I started getting outraged and angry. But I was regularly listening to a podcast called “TransLash,” and they were talking about anti-trans films. For a while I wasn't writing, because I was going through depression. It comes from my community back home, and from the trans and queer communities. Once I saw queer folks of color that were doing it, I was like, “Oh, they're like me, and I can do it.”įor me inspiration comes from the same folks that I grew up with-friends, family members-still doing what they do. I started taking creative writing classes, which helped me hone my craft and meet other authors. But eventually I got to the point where I was able to transfer from a community college to a four-year college, and I really started getting more into my craft. It took a while for me to figure out what I wanted to do, and there weren’t that many opportunities for me starting out. I had to work full time and go to school full time, and sometimes I had to work more and go to school part time. It was a long time, because of my upbringing and my past. She sat there glued in her spot, listening to them as they unraveled their history before her. Alvarado remembers being in awe of their stories and everything they’d gone through. Once a week or so, they got together to tell the stories of their past. Much of her family hails from Mexico, and as undocumented immigrants early on, they looked to each other for support. For Moncho Alvarado, a Cihuayollotl trans Xicanx poet, it was her family’s stories that kickstarted her journey as a writer.

I'd like to start a go fund me page for Kai and his farm to raise the funds needed to have a well drilled on his property. The island of Maui sits on an aquifer, so Kai could build a well and have all the water he needs but the cost is outrageous as there is only a few companies on the island who can do this, and of course they can charge whatever they want. There is plenty of water to go around but for some reason its being diverted to other areas. Everyone coming to Hawaii should take this tour and understand what does into a farm like this.ĭue to the greediness of those around the farm who are consuming more than their fair share of water, Kai and his family nearly lost a part of their farm because of lack of water in the area. I learned a ton of fascinating facts during my tour at Punakea Palms Coconut Farm, the small but gorgeous family-operated farm in West Maui. This farm is gorgeous and these tours are what the farm survives on. Coconut trees are a significant part of the iconic Hawaiian imagery, but did you know there is only ONE coconut farm anywhere on the islands ONE. He did an amazing job in his presentation. We also tried the coconut meat from a mature coconut. The owner, Kai or Ky (sorry I don't know the correct spelling) was passionate in explaining the differences in life cycles from young coconuts to mature coconuts, how the process of making authentic coconut milk occurs and the steps required. Loved this agro-tour in learning about the life cycle of a coconut. Subjectively, Iris Plus's graphics performance was really solid, too. We spent some time going HAM in Fornite and Dota 2 to get a feel for how some of the most popular esports titles fared. We found that you could have maximum detail or a full 1920x1200 resolution and get playable framerates, but you couldn't really have both at once. Both of these games got the best mix of performance and visual quality out of their medium settings at 1920x1200, or by dropping the resolution to 1440x900 and cranking up the detail. Intel's new graphics architecture represents an improvement over the last, but it's not magic. GRID Autosport and Hitman (2016) Performance Over Time That's fine, but we still want to take a closer look at gaming performance. Since we're looking at a new graphics architecture, it only makes sense to see how far along the drivers are. To get a good feel for this, we sampled a couple of games we already looked at previously with this system: GRID Autosport from our tests above and the Hitman reboot from 2016, which we looked at in the preview. To dig in depth, we used frame time capture tool CapFrameX to grab 60 seconds of frame times. This isn't a comparative analysis at this point we're not concerned with which system does a better job of keeping the frame times down. We're concerned with whether Iris Plus can give us solid frame rates throughout the length of a test run.įirst we'll look at GRID Autosport, which we tested with the same 1080p resolution and High graphical settings as we had above. The benchmark runs longer than 60 seconds, but our test only grabs the first 60 seconds of the run. When you couple the winds direction with other weather indicators you can in essence, predict the weather. A working weathervane will move with air resistance and the design points to the prevailing winds which gives a clear indication of where the wind is coming from. Put simply, a northerly wind blows from the north to the south. When it comes to public buildings a weathervane is often used to depict history, nature, or purpose of that building with other significant reasons for that particular weathervane coming into play.įirstly the winds direction is dictated by the direction from which it comes from. However, due to their ornate nature many people like to affix a Windvane for purely aesthetic reasons. Typically, our medium sized weathervanes measure 51cm x 51cm overall and our large weathervanes measure 78cm x 68cm overall which makes it easy to choose which would best suit your home.Ī Weathervane is typically used to show the direction of the wind. Here at Cuckooland we have two size variations that typically work well with most homes. You should be able to enjoy your weathervane as much as your neighbours do. If you have a home made up of more than two stories, a larger wind vane may be required to achieve a better viewing. Lastly consider the viewing distance between you and the weathervane. This is so the weathervane does not become ‘lost’ in the background of your garden. However if the wind vane is to be placed in a garden as a design aspect or feature, you may wish to consider a larger design. This means that you could have a slightly smaller design and achieve a great look. For weather vains which are placed high on top of a roof, the backdrop will of course be the sky which will highlight the outline of your chosen wind vane in a dramatic way. The harness will raise the weathervane design up and thus must be taken into consideration when it comes to sizing.īe mindful of the setting to which you are affixing said weathervane. Also keep in mind the harness of the wind vane this is the vertical spire which secures the design to the roof. A weathervane that is long will take up more of the roofs landscape, where as a tall wind vane will add height to your home. We suggest looking at the overall design of the weathervane before choosing a size. Similarly if the weathervane is too big for a home it can look garish or unsuitable. Small weathervanes may be suitable for sheds and annex style buildings but they may look out of place on top of a large house. Ideally you want a weathervane to look part of the overall architecture of your home. When it comes to sizing it is worth considering what appropriate size will best suit your dwelling. The fashion industry has often held sophistication in high regard. Great UX examples of KISS in actionīelow are a few great product designs that showcase how successful keeping it simple can be. Once the MVP is created, more user testing and research are conducted to determine what can be added or altered for greater user enjoyment and engagement. The creation of an MVP is by no means the stopping point for designing an intuitive product. Prioritize integrating the most wanted features.Find only what is needed to solve the problem (via user flows ).Research the users and the problem they are facing. To create an MVP, designers follow a step-by-step approach that goes a bit like this: Therefore, the creation of an MVP employs the KISS principle by focusing on only what is needed for the user to successfully and easily solve their problem. The MVP is then adapted and improved upon after testing and customer feedback. An MVP is defined as a basic version of a product that contains just enough for the product to be used by early users. KISS and the Minimum Viable ProductĪ great way to see the application of the KISS principle in UX design is by looking at the minimum viable product (MVP). While the impressive graphic might lure the user, if the animations do not offer an intuitive path to the end goal, the feature may become an annoyance to the user, pushing them to abandon the product altogether. Instead of starting at the beginning and brainstorming a wide range of possible solutions, designers can conceptualize their users interacting with the final product and finding everything they needed to fulfill their goal in an easy, effortless, and enjoyable way.įor instance, a designer may find the addition of a novel 3D animation to be an alluring and enticing feature. While there are many factors to consider when designing an experience for users, one of the best ways to keep the KISS principle in your UX designs is to work backward. However, this can frequently lead to overcomplicating a product for the sake of flare and pizazz or an impressive portfolio piece. It can be easy for designers to let their own imaginations and ambitions take over. Often when we start designing an experience for a specific group of users, there are many preconceived ideas of what they might need or want. How to apply the KISS principle to UX design But it is the way in which complex designs can be refined and made accessible to the user that separates a successful product from an unusable one. When it comes to designing for intricate beings like us humans, complexities are bound to arise. However, this is not to say that designers must avoid complexity in total. What’s apparent in each industry is the fact that unnecessary complexities and overcomplicated features can often render designs unusable. Since the birth of the phrase, the KISS principle has been adopted by a wide variety of industries like product design, education, software engineering, healthcare, and more. Anything more would render their designs futile and potentially life-threatening. He asked his fellow designers to think of the setting in which their products would be used-a war-torn battlefield or a basic mechanics garage.Īnything they designed should be able to be fixed and operated by novice pilots and mechanics in precarious and rudimentary situations. Johnson was the lead engineer at Lockheed Skunkworks, an aircraft manufacturer responsible for designing revolutionary spy planes, hyper and supersonic technologies, and more.īut how can the design of flying machines for war and reconnaissance be simple? Well, Johnson explained the principle to his team using an easily imagined scenario. However, the exact phrase “keep it simple, stupid” is thought to have been conceived by an engineer named Kelley Johnson. It’s common for artists and designers to mention its importance when creating successful works. The concept of simplicity has long been associated with sophistication, refinement, and efficiency. What is Keep it Simple, Stupid (The KISS principle)? How to apply the KISS principle to UX design. What is Keep it Simple, Stupid (The KISS principle)?.In this article, we’ll clarify the details of the KISS principle and how to use it. While keeping things simple sounds, well, simple, it can be difficult to determine exactly what a design needs, versus what can be left out. From grand buildings to mechanical novelties and even digital realities, some of the most prestigious designers in history have used one key principle to create life-changing designs: keep it simple.Ĭommonly phrased as “keep it simple, stupid” (KISS), this idea of keeping design elements limited to the essentials has benefits for both the designer and the user.īy getting rid of the unnecessary, you leave space to perfect exactly what the user needs to achieve their goal. So with that in mind, our Touchgrind Scooter guide covers everything you need to know about the game. Then there’s the precision factor required here - stringing together tricks without crashing allows you to increase your multiplier, and that naturally allows you to score more points, earn more trophies, and level up faster. While Touchgrind Scooter may seem like a pretty simple take on the world of extreme sports, it is deceptively deep, and you’ll find out soon enough that there are quite a few tricks that you may need to master in order to rack up your score. The game also has a ranking system that allows players to see where they rank based on their home country or city, or around the world. The company’s most recent title, Touchgrind Scooter, is hyped up as Illusion’s “most advanced and stunning” game yet in the franchise, and it comes with the same two-finger controls, several customizable scooters, realistic sound effects, and a whole lot of tricks that you can show off in a variety of game modes. I urge you to take your time with Touchgrind Skate 2, because if you do, you'll find a wonderful, intricately constructed game that, while a little rough around the edges, is a lot of fun once you get the hang of it.Illusion Labs knows a thing or two about sort-of casual extreme sports games for iOS and Android devices - they’re mostly known for the Touchgrind family of games, including the Touchgrind Skate and Touchgrind BMX series. You can record and share your replays, too, so your friends can marvel at your impeccable lines or gasp at your hilarious failures. There are decks and stickers to customise, but this is a game that really only cares about the time you spend on the board, not what it looks like.Ī brilliant asynchronous multiplayer mode that sees you trying to beat an opponent's score finishes off the package nicely, although it'd be even better if there were a pass-and-play option included. Toughgrind Skate 2 focuses all of its attention on the processes and actions involved in skateboarding, and it's so much richer for that. Challenges ask you to look at objects in different ways, opening up even more possibility in a game that's dripping with it. Chaining together lines becomes second nature, as you leap from ramp to rail to bench to floor, the score counter ticking over as you create your own little runs of tricks.Įach of the three parks you can choose from is brilliantly designed, allowing the game to flow. It's playing in a completely different way, and you'll spend a lot of time ramming into walls and pulling off wimpy little jumps.īut then your fingers start to get it, and you realise the potential for fun built into every pixel of the game. And for the first half an hour you'll hate it. It's a complex, involved system, but it gives you a level of control that button-taps and analogue stick-flicks just can't. Depending on how well you get the timing down it might be a long way or a couple of inches.įrom there you'll start to add swipes and taps, learning to spin the board in various directions, or exert pressure on different points to perform different grinds when you land on a rail. You lift your finger from the middle of the board, then from the back of the board, and it leaps into the air. The basis of pretty much all of your tricks is an ollie. You can brake and powerslide by swiping in a direction or lifting up one of your fingers.Įven this takes a while to get used to, though, and you'll often find yourself forgetting what your fingers should be doing. The most basic move involves pressing two fingers onto the board, then sliding them left or right to steer. Pull one off and you move to the next chunk of the tutorial. You're walked through the basic tricks and moves you're going to need to be able to perform, and then given a chance to try them out. The game starts with a series of tutorial videos. Really tough.īut if you persevere, you'll find a brilliant skateboarding game that rewards practice with pleasure. Here, though, your fingers replace your feet, dancing over the touchscreen in order to pull off combinations of flips and grinds to score as many points as you can. It's all about balance, timing, and sliding your feet around on a plank of wood no wider than the length of your shoes. Because in the real-world, skating is tough. Touchgrind Skate 2 comes at things from the other direction. With a few button-taps you could pull off ridiculous flips and twists that would make even the best real-life boarders roar in approval. The Tony Hawk games gave a generation of gamers the idea that skateboarding is simple. “We’re very interested in what campus was like during those years. “We’ve interviewed a few gentlemen who were here on campus in the 1940s, just after World War II,” Welch said. Many interviews reveal stories about quirky professors, the freshman rules and sock checks that have faded from campus life, and the once-traditional “dink,” a beanie hat freshmen were required to wear. The interviews include questions about why the Old Guard members chose W&J, their first impressions of the college as freshmen, stories about their professors, and about their fraternities and the role those organizations played in campus life. Welch said several other alums who no longer live in the area have contacted her about the project, and she is working on arrangements to interview them. Most of those interviews are with members of the 19 classes, which recently gathered on campus for anniversary celebrations. Since 2012, 14 alumni have participated in the Old Guard Oral History Project. Soon after, the library staff began working with the Library of Congress Veterans History Project, and decided to branch off of that project and start interviewing older alumni about their college experiences. The college did not have a full-time, dedicated archivist between the mid-1950s and the early 2000s, and although photos and other material were being catalogued in W&J’s archives during that time, there are few first-person accounts of student life.Ī part-time archivist was hired in 2003, and Welch was hired in 2011. The library staff also is in the process of adding the videos, including transcripts of the interviews, to the library’s digital archives. The interviews currently are available online at the U. Grant Miller Library staff, who have been recording video or telephone interviews with members of the W&J Old Guard for the past year. It’s during the 1950s and 1960s, and even earlier than that, where we’re missing some information.” “We don’t have many first-person records, though. “We know there are records of student life that we don’t have, except for what is recorded in the Pandora or the Red & Black during that time,” Welch said. The Old Guard is comprised of alumni who graduated at least 50 years ago. The Old Guard Oral History Project seeks to fill the gaps created when campus history went unrecorded by talking to the Old Guard members about their campus experiences. But there are still some questions about that situation and a few others in W&J’s student history that a new project might help clarify. It's assumed that students were responsible, said College Archivist & Outreach Librarian Amy Welch. 26, 2013)-In 1952 an unknown person-or more likely, a group of unknown people-parked a tractor inside the lobby of Old Main on the Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) campus. |
