South Londoner Henry Wu has been rightly labelled as one of the most exciting emerging producers this year. Swindle – Walter’s Call: watch?v=XwJma0MKA0U Swindle has brought together as many people as possible that share the same ethos, and that is spreading a positive message through music. Musically he continues on the jazzy path that his records on Brownswood and Deep Medi put him on the map for, but expands on the live instrumentation, the tempos and the breath of talent featured. The infamous Sub.Mission party in Denver is featured in the track of the same name with music dedicated to the people who have made it a home away from home for Swindle. LA is close to Swindle’s heart as he lived there for two months in 2014 meeting and making music with Ash Riser. Visiting four continents along the way, toasting the Grime roots in London with JME, saluting Swindle’s love and respect for Glasgow and Mungo’s Hifi alongside Flowdan and stopping in Bristol for an uptempo work out with TC, and a 16 bit intro from Joker. Constantly meeting other talented musicians and seeing new places helped naturally form an album that brings together friends and family from across the world together for the first time. Peace, Love & Music is the result of Swindle’s experiences touring globally over the past two years. After this, we couldn’t wait to bring him to The Foundry. After releasing his new album “Peace, Love & Music” earlier this year on seminal grime label Butterz, it instantly turned heads in the industry, and was picked up on by the likes of Toddla T, Annie Mac and Gilles Peterson himself. The warped mind behind some of our favourite releases over the last few years, Swindle has been on our “one to watch” list for a while now. Starting off life as a club DJ, Gilles continues to spin passionately around the world. From Sun-Ra to James Blake to Theo Parrish to Flying Lotus – if it swings in the right places, it’s in. As for the radio, his new 3-hour Saturday afternoon show on BBC Radio 6 Music has seen him take his unique musical mix to a new and growing audience of music lovers whilst the syndicated Worldwide radio show continues to spread his musical gospel… well, worldwide. This year alone has seen him in Rio, Martinique, Tokyo, Havana and most parts of Europe as well as East London of course. Starting off life as a club DJ, Gilles continues to spin regularly around the world. When all is said and done, whichever role Gilles is performing – DJ, broadcaster, producer, compiler, label boss or plain old record collector – the music is always the bottom line. Plus, Sheffield’s own Banana Hill take over room 2 with their own unique blend of African & Latin American rhythms, soulful grooves and global sounds. After his incredible show at The Foundry had queues round the block at Tramlines Festival this year, we knew we had to get Gilles back to the Steel City for a headline show! Joining him is a massive lineup of UK and international talent. Rhythm Section International will release Good Morning Peckham by Henry Wu on July 27.Gilles Peterson (Brownswood/BBC Radio 6 Music)īringing you something a little different tonight is a very special excursion of global sounds and rhythms, curated by the people behind the legendary Tuesday Club. Some six tracks deep, the upcoming record is described as “a long time coming” and apparently sees Wu step out in front of the mic for the first time on two productions. Given the company Wu keeps, a record for Rhythm Section International makes sense with the Good Morning Peckham 12″ due later this month and follows releases on Bradley Zero’s burgeoning label from London duo FYI Chris and Australian avant poppers Retiree. The description of Wu as a “slightly blazed, MPC-wielding beatmaker more concerned with wringing maximum warmth and soul from each beat, chord and melody, than fitting into any particular genre or dancefloor niche,” from this review by Matt Anniss seems most appropriate. Most recently spotted excelling on the Odd Socks label, Wu has previously featured on Alexander Nut’s Ho Tep label as well as sharing sides with Jeen Bassa on a 22a record. Sharing his name with BD Wong’s dinosaur DNA dabbling scientist from the Jurassic Park franchise, Henry Wu is among a clutch of promising young London artists who have been label hopping with aplomb these past few years. Good Morning Peckham will arrive on the London label at the end of the month.
